What did you expect?
MS realized they were actually giving the consumer something of value. The head office saw more money by forcing people to buy the full license. I imagine the review went roughly "Evaluation: People like the idea because it makes Vista affordable to multi-computer families. MS response based on the evaluation: Screw, we need more money and what can they do about it anyway?

As far as the "wonders" of Vista, look at what features they have dropped that were part of the hype to upgrade.
