WebSphere vs. Lotus

I am still critical of IBM's plans for the software group. I applaud their commitment to standardizing on Java. Modularizing allows the ability for customers to choose only what they require. But I wonder why they are moving to a lower technology when they still own the best business tool.

Lotus Notes has 2 strengths that cannot be found with any other technology:
1. Better datastore.
2. Security.

The Notes database allows anybody, even business managers, to easily create usable databases. In the hands of a professional programmer, it simplifies even the most complicated tasks. It has been undergoing gradual improvement for almost 20 years, and is usable for almost every business task when run on modern hardware. It could be the greatest business productivity improvements ever, but IBM has discussed throwing it away to replace it with DB2 from the almost obsolete technology called "relational databases".

Notes Security has been best-of-breed since before the internet made people aware that security should be a concern. It integrates with most internet technologies, and with physical mechanisms such as smart card readers.

I should mention that I have not researched Tivoli Access Manager. Maybe it is fantastic. But I cannot envision how a system separate from the datastore can come close to the functionality of Lotus Notes. Notes allows security to be handled at the individual record level and is capable of handling it at the field level. Security is automatically integrated into every application. Can anything else even be competitive?
