The arrival of GPL3 will spur increased activity.
Many of the open-source commercial vendors stood by to see how the Novell-Microsoft pact would pan out in the long run. If it turns out to be a great success, great... We'll sign up. If it goes bust, so sorry, glad it's not us.

However, with the restrictions of GPL3, and the grandfather clause that Novell is experiencing under GPL2, I'm going to take a wild guess and assume that many more are going to feel pressured to enter into similar pacts across the board, rather than wait to see how it all pans out.

They can't take the chance that if it is indeed successful, Novell and a handful of others would have an advantage under GPL3 because Novell and the others are exempted, while the onlookers took too long and locked themselves out.

Richard Stallman and the FSF probably unwittingly did more to accelerate interoperability for business customers and encourage people to stick with GPL2 than they intended.

Thank goodness for extremism. It helps us to see the middle-ground more clearly.

I, for one, will be avoiding GPL3 software wherever possible for the time being.
