Very good points. MS is desperate to keep application dependencies for
Windows, so you have to continue to buy Windows. That is why they want Software + Services. It is to make sure that many applications ONLY run on Windows. Really, one of the biggest reasons that many stay on Windows is the perceived necessity to run MS Office and other Windows only applications. So, MS will never do anything that makes it possible to access MS Office as a CROSS PLATFORM web application that is equal to the locally installed on Windows version.

But, yes, the rise of great web applications that will soon be working in offline mode with Google Gears has to be very disconcerting for Microsoft. Combine that with lots of states, schools, and other organizations going open source, and you can see why MS started the engines on the patent racket.
