With Software + Services, MS is trying to put lipstick on a pig.
With the software + services model, you must have the application installed on every computer you want to use it from, and they are not cross platform, and usable from any PC attached to the network with a browser. Your data is not even automatically available from any network attached computer. You have to do your own backup and restore, you have to install, update, and patch your application.

Sure, you can slowly add features to a bloated desktop application until it approximates a true web application, but you then have a pig with lipstick.
