Google apps will lose
But, that said, the best model for the future is the Google model of cloud computing, but with offline capabilities for anything and everything that can be reasonably done offline. You can bet that Google is working 24x7 to add a sandboxed high level language to Gears, and add all the features to Gears to really solve the offline problem.

When will MS give up on the two gravy trains and move to compete head on with the Google model? It all depends on how fast Google can improve Gears. It also might take a management change, as Balmer and Gates will resist needed changes. Will Ozzie replace Balmer??????

The Google thin client computing model is contradictory because it espouses keeping just about everything in the cloud, but solves performance problems and the offline problem by placing as much things as possible on the client. This model cannot prevail against the software + services model, because it is at least the S + S model is philosophically honest, and generally complex software work best by keeping as much things as possible local.

As for your points in previous messages about the disadvantages of rich client solutions: the installation of rich client software can be made very simple (as is the case with many of that type of software today); and technology is available today to make the maintaining of that type software transparent or of minimal fuss.
