Think long and hard
MS is nothing if not inert; and with the exception of Office--not entirely without problems of its own--they're neither innovative nor reliable. Their success to date relies almost exclusively on their relative monopoly in the OS business; and this move to Cloud is, by definition, a move away from the OS business and into the realm of more nimble and inventive organizations.

They can: pick Ozzie's brain and hope he comes up with a stunning, stand-alone offering that outshines that of every other player; slap a bunch of "web services" onto their OS and try desperately to hang onto their hegemony. Both are risky, but common sense says that they'll hang onto the desktop as long as possible; ergo, they'll remain bound to a set of proprietary frameworks designed for a different context, while others will be free to work the problems using a broader array of technologies. Tough sledding ahead.
