MS really must stick with the software PLUS services model for now.
We are talking Billions of dollars every month from Windows and MS Office. They have got to maintain those two gravy trains at all costs. It MUST all depend on those two pieces.

But, that said, the best model for the future is the Google model of cloud computing, but with offline capabilities for anything and everything that can be reasonably done offline. You can bet that Google is working 24x7 to add a sandboxed high level language to Gears, and add all the features to Gears to really solve the offline problem.

When will MS give up on the two gravy trains and move to compete head on with the Google model? It all depends on how fast Google can improve Gears. It also might take a management change, as Balmer and Gates will resist needed changes. Will Ozzie replace Balmer??????
