Handling hot ingots

tell us why Sun doesn't need to tread very carefully to make sure its technology isn't polluted before it is commercially viable?

Yes.
Sun's crown jewel is now Java.
Their servers are top end, where IBM is a competitor.
Solaris is a form of Unix, which has a successful competitor in its space.

This package includes a lot of Java.
Sun wants to leverage open source, not be destroyed by it.
So, as the review linked above mentioned, the license is very clear and specific about what can and cannot be done with the software.

They're treating open source as a hot ingot (potato is overused) that could destroy them.

I think they're on the right track looking at software. But they eventually will become an IP seller, and not retail (for end users).
Microsoft made the deal with them to get in on the ground floor. They also are forming a league against IBM with all the other potential victims, which is very sensible.

This package doesn't sound likely to be very successful, except with places not yet able to implement their own wholly owned form of Linux, until they're ready to replace it.
Open source is killing Sun, but they might as well make what they can before the axe falls.
