Sun is the original supporter of open systems and yes even Open Source.

Sure they occasionally get themselves beteen a rock and the open space over their desire to keep control over IP but when you look at the amount of influence they have had over the industry - they are the original BSD commercial success - you are on the fringe saying Sun is against Open Source ...

Look at how many times they have had huge successful products subverted from them (did you know CISCO resold Sun boxes as routers until they made enough money to hire their own HW & OS team?). Or look at the whole Netscape/Java/IE fiasco ...

tell us why Sun doesn't need to tread very carefully to make sure its technology isn't polluted before it is commercially viable?
