Historical question
Looks like Time Warner is buying a cheap new suit for the orphan.

More interestingly, back when there was more browser competition, I'm not sure about the timing of events after the decision by Netscape to rely on what became the Mozilla project for new versions.

I have read that when the open source project had spent a while looking at the old Netscape code, they decided to junk it and start from scratch.

When that happened, obviously a new version of Netscape wouldn't be released for a long while.

Now, I've also read that Microsoft was pursuing a series of actions that led to criticism in court to "cut off Netscape's air supply". That might well have been enough to win the browser war with Netscape.

However, I'm wondering if all the improved editions of IE which were not matched by Netscape because they were waiting on their open source project might not also have had an impact.

I don't know if a definitive answer is possible, but was the decision to restart Netscape code from scratch a fatal factor in the competition?
Apparently, to me, it was. But I'm very willing to be corrected.
