NPR is largely supported by grants and pledges to local stations, as such it receives less than half of its funding from the government.

Incidentally, the Fox News Channel is ran by a Mr. Roger Ailes who formerly was campaign strategist for George Bush (the elected one). Ailes hired John Ellis to direct campaign coverage during the 2000 election. John Ellis is George W. Bush's first cousin. Now, it seems to me that putting people with such close ties to the President in charge of a news organization would likely not make it "fair and balanced." Rather, it would be heavily distorted in the President's favor, as it is.
