Yes,the millions of hack-ware toolbars being peddled out there are mainly spyware. Yahoo and Google are an exception, and the only one's I recommend or use.
However, Windows XP SP2 has NOTHING in it to curtail spyware. Nothing. You install the wrong ActiveX, you're hit. You install the wrong downloaded junk-ware from the internet, you're hit. You install Kazaa, you're hit.
XP SP2 will do nothing to stop this.
What is really a shame is the AntiVirus companies taking absolutely ZERO interest in preserving computers from this garbage. Corporate America should be mad as hell (and from what I read, they are).
The #1 cause of a call to a manufacturers help desk is now Spyware Infections (as told right here on ZDNet a few weeks ago). This major problem is effectively being ignored by the big AntiVirus companies and it's not right.
Ad/Spyware is a Virus/Trojan, we just don't call it that.
