You are right on all counts but defaults are set
Some defaults are made by the OS developer and set but they should not be set without any options to change the defaults. This is no longer a choice which creates the problems with running althernative software or programs. If Windows would not allow any Email handlers and set IE7 to run within Windows with no options to the user to use Thunderbird, Opera or a mail handler of their choice, then it's no longer a choice.
