- Running it in a virtual machine doesn't change the activation requirements. Unless you hack it which wouldn't be easy, you would still need a legitimate copy of Vista. I've run All the other versions of windows as guests on linux and linux as guests on windows. Its an excellent technology for software testing. If you were trying to test a piece of software for home users it seems like Vista home basic as a guest os would be the way to go.
