What Sun prefers is very material. Linux distibutors were a very cohesive group until recently. Sun has good reason to fear non-standardization and fragmentation amongst the different Linux distributors. Look what happened to Unix. Their was a desktop version of Unix being developed and deployed and the distributors fragmented. Software was not compatible from one distro to another. That is when Microsoft, DOS and Windows stepped in.

BTW: If MS had been smart, they would have built Windows around their version of Unix known as Xenix. It would have been a much stronger OS than it is today. Xenix is a "clean" OS while DOS is a "dirty" OS.

The same holds true for IBM and OS/2. If IBM had been smart, OS/2 would have been built around their copy of Xenix which they licensed from MS.
