excellent point, re-buying all the SW kills MS cost model
but they spin it as "productivity". Up until know they usually delivered a more stable OS and the underlying HW was worth upgrading. But, how many companies really need to ditch the 1GHz Windows 2K machine for a 3GHz WindowsXP where they pay extra to downgrade to Win2K when the old box spent 90% of its time idle? If you are a power user, its different, you probaly already abandoned MS for a real workstation years ago anyway, but if you just want to do spreadsheets or word processing or workflow stuff on the corporate website, how is rebuying all the HW and SW going to make you more productive?

The upgrade treadmill is over, MS cash flow based on it is in serious jeopardy! But, maybe they can buy the next round of upgrades by forcing content into Windows 2012 (or so).
