Nice try, but you missed the target by a mile.

The "community" is not some IT shop writing patches or a bunch of idiots looking at some database for answers. They are a collection of programmers and professionals addressing problems with actual experience. It is not some hap hazard folks that throw out advice or throw code at something to correct problems. It is structured with checks and balances and in most cases, free. That cannot be said about most paid support from vendors (Microsoft, Sun, Novell or just about anyone else for that matter).

You statement about proprietary doesn't wash. It doesn't matter what a company sold it for. There is no way a company would sell to the consumer this. To another company that sells Linux distros, maybe. But in any case that would not be the consumer cost regardless (assuming that Company B even decided to try and profit from them indivdually). And I can't think of one proprietary add-on that would be business critical. At least none without free alternatives.

No matter how you slice and dice it; your statements don't compute.
