I have to ask - isn't this exactly what Microsoft has done for the last 30 years. If they didn't build something that people want, they would have gone out of business YEARS ago.

Oh, come now. That's a VERY old and tired argument. You DO have a choice. You can go buy PC's with Linux installed by default. You can go buy machines with MacOS installed. You can buy machines with Solaris installed. You used to be able to buy machines with CP/M, GEM/STOS, AmigaOS, NeXT, BeOS, etc. There is ALWAYS choice - it's just that most people choose to buy a machine running an OS that they're generally familiar with and which, despite it's quirks and issues, they continue to buy.

Most people just want to get on with their lives. Most people don't want to waste time rebuilding their kernel when they change graphics cards and want to know that when they plug in their new printer that it'll (generally) just work.

Linux has a long way to go on the desktop ... not because of Windows, but because Apple out-*nixed Linux.
