Keeping Flip Wilson Au Courant
Let's say you have some 2x4s and you're about to frame a house. Off to the
hardware store you go to pick up some nails and a hammer (in case you didn't
have one). Give the store the money and back to the site to solve your problem.

Some of us feel that software should be the same way. We're not opposed to the
hardware store or the nail and hammer manufacturers making money. Shoot,
we're building houses to make money.

But, were we to walk into the hardware store one day and be told that the nails we
are buying cannot be used with the hammer we own and we'll have to buy a new
hammer, that might seem evil. Or that we need to buy premium nails if we are
working with materials that the standard nails are not licensed for, that might
seem evil. Or as we share a story about the time we clamped a wrench to the
hammer in order to increase the moment of force for a nail we were pulling, we
suddenly hear that we've worked around the technical limitations of the hammer
we bought and will now have to pony up some more money or pull all the nails we
drove. That might seem evil. If one is a customer, I hasten to add. if one were the
hardware store, it's goooood bizness, plus one would point over one's shoulder
and say, "the shareholders made me do it."
