Er, its patents not copyrights ...

There is a vast difference in that patents are far more expansive IP claims than copyrights. But in spite of Microsoft claims to the contrary, most of there patents are dubious, and the ones that are not have never been tested in court. And software patents are themselves a recent invention which itself has not been tested in court. And Microsoft is doing its very best at this point to AVOID having them tested in court, which makes it very unlikely that they will ever actually use them against Linux. Mark Shuttleworth is on record as saying that he will NEVER agree to a deal with MS AND that he believes that Ballmer and his types will eventually be out of the picture and that MS will be repopulated with a whole new management that will be more IBM like in its approach to open source. Thus their current moves are just opportunistic plays to get in on as much of the action as possible while they still have a chance. True, they do have a long history of extending and embracing, but it hasn't worked for Linux and it never will. But a few big companies are willing to give their money away and MS is willing to take it. Not a big deal.
