Gentoo
With Gentoo you get all the advantages of LFS without the headaches and lack of productivity. The only disadvantages compared to binary distros are compile times, although if you use cron jobs to do it during off times that lessens the headache considerably, and the need to know how to manually configure your base system. The only thing you lose with Gentoo over LFS are bragging rights.
