Considering the old standard
If I remember correctly, Microsoft was going to start dropping support after five years. Interestingly enough, the currently slated release date for the Longhorn client is almost exactly 5 years after the release Windows XP, meaning that everyone would have to instantly upgrade to the longhorn version to maintain support. Then again, if Microsoft continues as they have in the past, and delays the OS longer, there wouldn't be a supported version of Microsoft Windows on the market.

Interesting predicament if you ask me.

Even if Longhorn makes the schedule, Application makers will have to fight to get certified on the platform, giving little time to check home-brewed, other 3rd party apps on the new OS. Hence why I had many wait over a year before migrating to Windows XP. XP, Which still manages to have a couple bugs or annoyances that ellude me, has been a painful migration.

But then again, Longhorn is suppose to be the ultimate OS. I just wonder how long before someone decides to redesign a kernel that is designed from the ground up for 64 bit systems.
Being as how many of Windows 9X kernel's instabilities came from being designed ontop of a 16 bit DOS kernel.

Can we expect the same thing from Windows XP 64 or the 64 bit version of Longhorn?

Perhaps Linus and his crew should find a way to get a true 64 bit kernel for Linux started. Could beat Bill at his own game.
