I'm still not sure of your point?
Sure they make billions and would like to make even more billions. That's a given.

You suggested this was 'piecemeal' income.
They actively try to make sure that this initial income leads to other income streams - apps, servers and middle-ware etc.
Some might even call this 'lock in'.
