Encryption? What does this help?
The new release of SQL Server, due early next year, will encrypt data stored within the database, making it much more resistant to attacks, said Kirsten Ward, a product manager at Microsoft.

What effect does this have on performance. If you encrypt the data files on the hard drive you take a massive hit. It will be interesting to see if the performance hits encypting data with in the datafile.

Also how does this stop unauthorized access? If you compromise a password of database user who access to the data then encrypting does really matter. If you have your server stolen then it's local access and I can crack that database in time it take reboot the server. So what are you gaining? Remember the SQL Slammer worm took advantage of the default SA password being blank. You have that SA account there is nothing stopping you from accessing the data.
