Stalemate on digital content?

Happens all the time: We use software proprietary software specific task, paid a lot of money for it. That company over the past 5 years has changed hands 3 times and now has gone bankrupt entirely. There is no one to support the software now and we don't have the source code.

So had it been open source, that wouldn't be a problem.

What do you do when a problem appears with Oracle and thier answer to fix the problem is upgrade to the next version, $30,000 please. Thank you come again. All that to keep an old version of software that works fine but won't run on Windows 2000.
