Easy answer. NO.
See, before Gates came along the world of computing was already majorly corrupt, beyond anything Bill Gates could have conceived of.....AT&T owned all hardware into every home in the U.S., and they created Unix with that MOB money. See, they were a MOB of the likes Bill Gates could only dream of having. Then the Federal government took billions of our tax dollars and just handed them to Berkeley, Stanford, Parc, vint cerf etc. When they were done building a secure Unix, they told the researchers who got a free ride through college and free access to all of this technology, to take this taxpayer funded technology and privitize. On top of that, the Feds(THUGS) told them they'd be exempt from anti trust law while they built out Unix and progressed the project as private companies. One of the recipients of this silver spoon company birth was McNeally at Stanford and the feds funded his SUN startup. (Stanford University Network was the project, but they gave him Risc processors and all the technology needed to manufacture them, all of the researc from Berkeley and Parc and Stanford.

So here is Scott McNeally, has the best resources a computer company could conceive of in this FED(THUG) era and he started to build up SUN with the instructions and everything he needed to start a huge company (including taxpayer cash) and so look at where SUN is at today. They were never hampered by Microsoft. Neither was Apple. Neither was all of the Unix distros that owned the server rooms of the internet and still do......yet they never go beyond Unix....I mean SUN had everything they could have wished for and they are still just building the same thing they were handed. Maybe a little advancement here and there but no real breakthroughs. Windows came along and OUTDATED SUN....it was better, easier to use and people started asking, why are we over paying for this SUN equipment that keeps us in the mainframe era when Microsoft has new and exciting stuff going on.

the end.
