MS could bail itself out of its death spiral by working with this angle ...
several solutions over the years have done Windows on UNIX and UNIX on WIndows. Its not rocket science, several challenges exist but they are managable as long as vendors want interoperability. MS would win big time if its apps could run securely on top of stable OS environments and others would win if Unix apps could run on Windows boxes if that's the poison they choose.

The only thing stopping this level of interop is the vendors ... well, one vendor actually who seems to think that interop is not its problem. Even in this case, that same vendor sends key customers to a little guy when its a showstopper ... now out of benovelence for the customers needs!
