Many projects shipped with Linux distributions will go GPL3.
The best example is Samba, which ships on both Desktop and Server distributions. Also, all of the GNU parts will go GPL3. So, if Novel and Xandros want to fork those and start maintaining GPL2 versions themselves, they are welcome, but that would not be very practical for them.

In the mean time, Linux will eventually go GPL3, but it will take time to build consensus, then track down all of the people that did not put the "GPL2 or later" clause on their code.

And, MS is not trying to get along here and make things compatible. If they were truly interested in compatibility, they could start by fully documenting their APIs and giving sample code. You will find here that they will be working behind the scenes to create incompatibilities, at the same time pretending to cooperate with a few suckers.
