It is you who are confused, StorageMan
A product always begins with invention. Have you forgotten the origins, from kids tinkering in garages, of the personal computer?

MS "built their business and customers" from modest beginnings. It is their hundreds of millions of users that now characterize a static, not to say declining, monopoly--not business building. MS is no longer business-building; rather it is trying to preserve its past gains.

It is absurd for you to suggest that "unix didn't do that"--unless you are simply stating the obvious about present relative market share. MS' business success owes much to antecedents in OS development.

MS' business success today indeed stems very little from any meaningful invention, and instead derives from quasi-criminal muscle that is a degenerate form of business. Healthy business provides win-win outcomes and thrives on competition. MS obviously does neither.

Whatever thanks we might have owed to MS and BillG for bringing us accessible personal computing, we have long since already offered.
