This separates the wheat from the chaff
I agree with Axon......the 90's boom brought us a huge influx of underqualified, poorly trained people who went into IT because it was a hot field - not becuase they had an aptitude or strong interest in it.

It seems to me that these are the people who now find themselves out of work. I suspect many of these people will re-train for other lucrative careers in another booming field and leave IT altogether in time.

Those people who truly love the profession will adapt and learn the skills that are required of today's IT professional.

I have some experience with working with off shore programmers and I can tell you that this trend opens up an entirely new market for Project Managers, software testers/troubleshooters, people who can write technical documents and help files in English, etc. In my opinion, survival will only require that you enhance your skills so that you can't be replaced by a foreign laboror overseas. I belive that for every overseas programmer, one highly skilled individual on this shore will be cleaning up their code, writing documentation and testing their work....not to mention trying to figure out how to communicate product specifications in a foreign language.
