Your post shows an ignorance of the complexities involved. Basic functionality aside, there is actually very little "fluff" in programs. Taking the perenial favorite bloat target, MS Office, it has a broad array of features because it serves every audience.

Is mail merge fluff? To me yes. To customers that need it, no. Is the net present value function in Excel fluff? To me, of course. *Powerpiont* to me is fluff. happy

But there are lots of users out there who need features I don't. That's why programs grow in size. Oh, that and a little feature users never see: maintainability.

Object Oriented programming, .Net, Java, they all have overhead. As the programmer's workload goes down the computer's workload goes up. But there's a desperate need to give the programmer more power, because the same programming team has to do projects today that would have taken ten times the number of programmers 10 years ago. And its only getting worse, what with lean mean downsizing machine companies.

On topic, I think Amdahl's law is going to trump Moore's law. Parallel processing is seductive, but she's a fickle mistress, promising more than she'll ever deliver, and demanding more than she's worth.
