You write to what's available
Take games for instance, very very few games are multi threaded at this point in time. But its something that game developers should be really looking into.

This may be happening as we speak. Remember, Those games where written to what was available. They couldn't write for what didn't exist. Now that multi-core processors are availiable, I'll take a guess that some companies are starting to write for them as we speak.
