You're right re: parallel processing.

I hate to sound like a shill for graveyard equipment, but the Commodore Amiga was the first viable parallel processing computer with superior multimedia and math power. Spat on as a game machine, but the spitters came from an arena who now cater to multimedia, math, and games... Whoever said the strongest survived was a liar. The best liars survive in our domain. grin

I also decried "winmodems" - more low cost garbage that used CPU cycles instead of hardware chips to do the processing work.

You can imagine my loathing of IDE, how Apple ditched SCSI for IDE in their Macs, and how it became a de facto standard, but as we all know, nothing's perfect.

In terms of PC operating systems, BeOS (before it died and the corpse bought by Palm for some bizarre reason) was the most fluid multitasking PC operating system. It was also near impossible to find compatible peripherals (sound, video, et al). Had they a wider range of supported hardware, it may have lived longer.

It would be nice to see more complex hardware designed around the x86/x64 platforms. But until Microsoft supports it, it's not going to be more than a niche geeky cool toy of true potential that might be spat on instead...
