audio systems are software based. A real sound card still has its own co-processor. All the things you mention are available in a hardware format except USB. USB is software bound, which is one reason FireWire blows its doors off even with a lower max theoretical speed (compairing FireWire 400 to USB 2.0 (480Mbps))
