There are reasons for "Standards"
Microsoft is finding it harder each year to justify moving to there own propietary formats.

"Standards" were created to unify and improve compatability among various hardware and software. This is essential to the progress of software and hardware development. Yes, competition is good. "Standards" allow for better competition without fragmenting the Internet and IT industry. Look at Internet Explorer, very little change to it since Microsoft won the "Browser War". It improved leaps and bounds when Netscape was around. Now, there are very little improvements to it.

I run Windows and I avoid Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is terrible for security (vb scripts) and surfing the Internet with it is a chore. Where surfing with Mozilla helps me get things done. I can say that there are a few sites that do not support "Standardized" webpages. I do not do business with those companies. They have lost me as a customer because I will not change from Mozilla to Internet Explorer just to "check-out" items from their website. I do business else where.
