It will indeed be forked ...
Most of the existing developers will go with v3, which will leave the users of the old v2 code responsible for maintaining their own code base. THAT will be the anatomy of the fork. Since Novell probably won't want to take on this project of maintain a GPL2 fork of all the effected code, Microsoft will either have to take that on themselves or find someone else to do it for them. If you think this will be an easy task, you are dreaming. If you think this won't bring additional legal entanglements for Microsoft, you are dreaming. You ARE dreaming.
