Remember, you're using what John Carroll in the TalkBacks called the 70's definition of an operating system.
He makes the correct point (to me) that by incorporating additional functionality into the operating system, Microsoft has provided API's which simplify the job of producing those innovative applications you're describing.

Linux's strategists have admitted that they have to move beyond the 70's definition, but they trail Microsoft by a considerable margin.

So, the difference is largely semantic, based on different conceptions of operating systems. You and P. Douglas are basically agreed on the future course of the industry.

Me, I'm concerned that, with all the identification of the need for limited functionality going on for various jobs in the enterprise, the predicted innovations will not be implemented for a lot of users.
Great software capabilities, comparatively few units bought if I am, unfortunately, right.
