You don't need to misrepresent my statements
I think I made it very clear. There is much room for innovation in software. As a matter of fact, when I said there was little evidence of innovation in the OS, you went on to great length about applications riding on the OS. Yes, there is much to be done, and the OS will continue to evolve, the same as the hardware architecture - which went open two decades ago - continues to evolve. Linux does not get in the way. It opens the framework on which the innovative stuff rides. Under no circumstances does Linux undermine innovative software and the profits that can be derived therefrom.

Interesting attempt at rebuttal -

If it were possible, should an Open Source group give away TV sets for free?

Great case in point. TVs are commoditized. You can't "give TVs away for free," unless you can find a way to manufacture the parts, set up the assembly lines and distribute at zero cost. But you do find any number of companies selling at the bottom end for razor-thin margins. Somebody else - the RCAs and Sonys - invested in the research, brought the advanced sets to market, made their profit and moved on. The innovators move up as their technology becomes well understood. Apparently you don't like it, but that's the way markets work.

And there is plenty - plenty - of room for innovation and profit in software, despite your guys keep pronouncing the end of the line for computers ? both software and hardware. I've been in the field since 1966, and have yet to see anything like the end of the line - either hardware or software.
