if you will remember what "free" software does is give you the "freedom" to modify it to your needs... this product STILL qualifies under that. no one said there was "no cost," to have this freedom... well no one except the stupid extremists who are trying to distort the truth... the cost in this case is your choice... either you pay money, or you pay in contributions. it sounds pretty fair to me. even if you don't like the cost.. it's still "free" in that you have the freedom to modify it.

and why does Linux NEED to be a new product? Windows in the same sense is not a new product. it was a repalcement for other things.
As for your arguemnt abotu takign away value.. so what? The existence of any valid competition (proprieatry or open), will lower the value/demand for the existing product.. It's not a function of it's open sourceness, it's high school economics.
