"Why does it bother some people that someone is willing to contributes code/time/development for whatever their personal reasons?"

Because some people don't bother with it in any form. They've never done- or contributed to- any benefit walks (Heart, Lung, Cancer, AIDS), community projects (like Meals On Wheels, Habitat For Humanity), baked sales (church, school), or charities (like RedCross, UnitedWay, WWF).

Why would you expect someone like that to have any conceivable notion that someone would do something they love (programming) without taking money? Just because it benefits other people (software users)!

Must be that everyone contributing to the things I mentioned above are all "exploited suckers".
