Ever hear of consultant fees?

You don't have to be an employee of a company to be paid by a company.

A consultant can control his or her own direction, but of course that direction could be altered by one or more companies offering some money to said consultant to fit their needs.

Now sure, if we're dealing with an OSS program that they can freely obtain through other means, the company can choose someone else to alter the program to fit their needs. But that someone else certainly would not be as familiar with the code as the original coder, and the time wasted on familiarizing himself with the code would most likely cost more than just paying the original coder to work with them.
