ssuming that the labor would have been done by paid staff
And that's exactly where you went wrong. MySQL has never been entirely developed by paid staff. It's open source and much of the development comes from the comunity. There are no jobs lost here. There is no cost cutting by reducing staff here. Somthing you are having trouble with understanding so it seems.

Your point about re-using code strikes at the hart of open source but not in the way you describe. Re-use of code is one of the main purposes of open source software. It enables developers to use other peoples brilliant work, with their full permission, and use it to create some thing that might be brilliant as well. If science were to follow your line of reasoning we would still be in the stone age. It would mean every scientist would have to come up with his own basic theories instead of basing his work on brilliant theories of the people that went before him. Imagine having to re-invent the theory about gravity every time you design an airplain or a car etc etc. Horses would be what you would see looking out of your window and we would be using pigeons to cary these messages back and forth.
