Save on salaries; sell the work
Quoting from the article:
One of the keys for MySQL in building a profitable business ... has been to offer a variety of licensing plans. ... many businesses would rather pay for a license that allows them to keep their work.
"We actually make our money very much similar to a traditional software company; most of our revenue comes from licensing," ...

It also helps to not be a purely open-source company, said Steve Gerdt, program manager for open-source strategy at IBM. While Big Blue is amid a major Linux push, the company stills sells a lot of proprietary software...

Use volunteers to cut the total cost of developing the software, then sell it and the proprietary software you've written to run on top of it.

How do you spell exploitation?
S-u-c-k-e-r.

Okay, that's not completely fair.
Some people are not trying to change the model for how software is written. They're adding experience to their resume, sometimes bringing themselves directly to the attention of companies that might hire them.
Though those companies don't make any promises, I'm sure. This strategy is among the more successful "maybe"s I've seen.
