Java's future (or not)
Sun completely blew it when they sued/fought/walked away from MS over Java. I believed it the day it happened, I believe it now. What Sun really did was push MS to create .NET and WinFX (now part of .NET 3 which is installed by default with Vista.)

Microsoft is also being very plain about how WPF/E can be ported to all sorts of devices and operating systems. (The open source broweser folks are working to fully implement it.)

Bottom line, by virtue of Vista's roll out over the next two years, WPF and .NET will be the defacto standard. Yes, others will build on Java, or even on Adobes new offerings (flash), but as we have all seen in the past, being able to roll out to the user base is going to be the key factor in the long run concerning what is adopted.

Microsoft' new Web creation tools (Expression Suite/Visual Studios) running on Microsoft Vista PCs, developing .NET/WPF applications/widgets/whatever delivered via the Web to Microsoft IE and their amazingly massive user base.

Do I see some long term hold outs for Java? Of course, there are always hold outs. Do I see it saving Java in the long term? No...
