Java kernel will help, too
Due out in Java 6 update 2 is the Java kernel - a stripped down (2 - 4 megs) JRE for fast download and startup times, which will gradually download the remaining bits of the JRE as needed and/or during relative inactivity.

This, combined with JavaFX script, and JavaFX mobile (for distribution on cell phones and embedded devices, the fact that the full Java JRE is far more powerful and feature rich and cross platform than Flash or Silverlight, and finally the fact that it's all open source, will put Java applets and web based RIA Swing based GUIs, and rich GUIs on cell phones, in the forefront.

If Sun can execute all of this quickly and effectively (a big "IF") Java can really make huge inroads on the client side.

But then again, Java is already improving on that front - Swing is much faster and better looking than before, SWT/Eclipse RCP is excellent, and JME already dominates the cell phone market.

Regardless, the future of client side Java is looking brighter than ever.
