Where i work (support for a major US cellular company) policy dictates that users are not even able to check and see if their malfunctioning mouse is correctly and securely plugged in. Determining that your mouse is not functional and swapping one out from the vacant workstation beside you represents "the connection of an unauthorized device to your computer" and is subject to diciplinary action. This policy does not recognise any sort of qualification ( i have multiple MCPs, A+ cert. Novell, etc etc)and am even resorted to as the "spare I.T "guy, and yet I can and have gotten into trouble. Our organization is so full of idiots and hackers/self appointed "experts" that these terribly restrictive policies continue to exist. Sometimes users simply aren't allowed to take a self sufficient approach.
