Because they can. A waste of time and precious resources, yes - Needed, no.

All those precious cycles wasted, which otherwise could have been drawing screensavers in dark, empty offices! happy

(Do you know about the Condor system from the University of Wisconsin [http://www.cs.wisc.edu/condor/]? It scavenges cycles from idle machines without any noticeable impact to actual users. I don't know whether that's what was being used here, but my impression from the story is that it was, at the very least, very similar. Something similar is used to analyze signals from the SETI project, which searches for signs of life in outer space. There are tons and tons of wasted CPU cycles out there... hats off to people who can find uses for them.)
