IBM settled its antitrust case by agreeing not to enforce patents
I point out that in the 1970's IBM settled its antitrust case by among other things agreeing not to enforce patent rights. It has only been a couple of years now that IBM fulfilled that settlement.

I personally believe that Microsoft management would not have been able to use monopoly power if IBM had been allowed to enforce patents. In other words it was IBM's antitrust problems that allowed Microsoft to get where it is today.
