regarding your question about a Linux GUI...
use whichever one makes you most comfortable. I have used both GNOME and KDE, switch between them depending on mood or need. They both have their own pluses and minuses, depending on ones perspective. This will spark (lame) debates between users as to which is better!

Use the one that works best for your needs!
